Work statement

Memories and experiences are the bedrock of my paintings. Memories, love and mythology yolk togethermy work’s inspiration and its thematic scheme. The images in my paintings serve as a dual metaphor which are attuned to historical importance and personal experiences. All the myriad images formed that are perhaps lying dormant in our deep experiential memory are represented by the images in my paintings. The psychological and emotional aspects of a woman’s life, her transitional identity and the state of a perplexed existence are reflected in my artwork. The landscapes which I paint are a conglomeration of conscious and subconscious mind and the characters in it either appear benumbed or what seems like an indefinite state of suspension.
A personal journal of sketches, silent and unhindered observation of my own thoughts, emotions, experiences along with observing the world around are a rich go-to references for me. As I continuously negotiate with myself, interest in simple subjects gets evoked and it gradually engulfs me with my work.
My paintings are done on canvases layered with semi-transparent rice papers. The textured surface is then layered with dark waterproof drawing ink, on which tones of colours are applied to create images. To me this process of painting somehow resonates with the multiple layers of a woman’s mind, peppered with desires, fantasies, memories and imagination.
