Born 1984 in West Bengal, Sharmistha Kar has her BVA and MFA in Painting from the Rabindra Bharati University and University of Hyderabad respectively. She was awarded the prestigious Charles Wallace India Trust Award in 2013. Her solo works have been showcased at the New Castle University in UK, and in several group exhibitions held across the country and in UK & USA.
Sharmistha, in her own words shares, “Changing surroundings allow the mind to grow. One’s immediate surroundings are important. I am optimistic and greedy to know – I write what I find in a special diary, and in a special language that is invisible to others. Sometimes I think globally, sometimes I think I’m a feminist, but I never had any intention to be one. Being a woman, I know I will experience conflict and the dilemma between my profession and my future domestic life. That I do know. My main interest is to capture these immediate or sudden flitting thoughts on the way of my life -the way I relate to myself and to others, the way I deal in private and public space with my private self. These thoughts find their reflection in drawing, painting on paper and on canvas.”
Sharmistha’s skill and versatility with paper, fabrics and canvas as a medium is worth appreciating.
